An association of local gin dealers, has said that the current ban on the production and consumption of Ogogoro by the government will obscure the culture and heritage of the people of Niger Delta

Under the name Ogogoro Dealers Association of Nigeria, the National President of the association, Mr. Adams Dio, stated this in Lafia, Nasarawa State capital, while speaking with journalists.

He said the local economy of Niger Delta survived on Ogogoro, adding that outsiders were the one profiting from the region’s oil.

Dio stated that if the ban is allowed to stay, then traditional marriage ceremonies would be condemned to the past since gin brewed locally was one of the rituals of such occasion.

His word, “The local gin does not kill, as its production and consumption had been in existence as far back as 100 years ago.

“Therefore, banning the commodity is like banning the tradition of those who produce it, because it is a tradition that no marriage activity can take place without presentation of some quantities of Ogogoro.”
