The death of a 22-year-old nursing student at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has sparked concern over emergency care at the facility, following allegations that oxygen was not administered during his struggle to breathe.

The hospital management has launched an investigation into the death of Taiwo Godwin Ayodeji, a Post-Basic Nursing student who reportedly suffered an asthma attack while playing football before he was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

A report published on Saturday, October 17, 2026, alleged that Ayodeji, who had a history of asthma, was taken to the hospital after developing severe breathing difficulties.

According to an account attributed to a colleague, the student was still able to walk into the emergency unit when he arrived at the facility.

However, the colleague alleged that although Ayodeji was placed on oxygen equipment, the oxygen supply was not switched on as his condition deteriorated.

The account further claimed that his condition worsened during efforts to save him, with medical personnel reportedly encountering difficulties while trying to resuscitate him.

The allegations have raised questions about the emergency response he received. However, the circumstances surrounding his death, including whether any lapse in treatment occurred or contributed to the outcome, have not been independently established.

The incident has also reportedly heightened anxiety among students and colleagues because Ayodeji’s death was said to be the second involving a nursing student from the same school at the facility this year.

Reacting to the tragedy, the hospital management confirmed that an investigation was underway to establish what happened at its General Medical Practice Unit, where the student was receiving treatment.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ajibola Abiola, said the management sympathised with the bereaved family and others affected by the loss.

“We recognise the profound grief and distress this unfortunate incident has caused and extend our sincere sympathies to all those affected,” the statement said.

The management assured students, staff and members of the public that the investigation would be expedited and conducted thoroughly, impartially and transparently in accordance with established procedures.

It added that the probe would establish the facts, identify any issues that might have arisen and determine the necessary steps to address them.

“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served. The Hospital will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities and stakeholders as required,” the statement added.

The hospital also appealed to the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudging its findings.

It reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and the maintenance of high standards of healthcare delivery.

Ayodeji’s death has placed the spotlight on the need for a clear account of the emergency treatment he received, particularly in view of the allegations concerning the oxygen equipment.

A definitive conclusion on whether the death involved medical negligence will depend on the findings of the investigation and the available medical evidence.

The management prayed for strength and comfort for the deceased’s family, friends and colleagues, while expressing hope that he would rest in peace.
