The Nigeria Customs Service, on Thursday, said smuggling of Nigeria’s Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, has not stopped.
The expectation on the back of the oil subsidy removal breeding astronomical price of the product, was that it would discourage smuggling to neighbouring countries.
According to acting Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, it’s still business as usual.
Adeniyi stated this in Abuja at an event to mark his 100 days in office where he announced a monthly rise in Customs’ revenue generation from an average of N202bn to N343bn, representing an increase of 70 per cent, adding that the service had surpassed its monthly revenue target of N307bn.
The Customs boss said that although there’s a reduction in petrol smuggling saying the activity is being fuel by very low price of product in Nigeria in comparison with the country’s neighbours.
