One of the organisers of the planned protest, Deji Adeyanju, has accused Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun of trying to rewrite the constitution.
The nationwide protest scheduled between August 1-10 has come under attack from government officials including the Police IG.
The latter had called on the intending protesters to submit their full details.
Speaking against this backdrop, Adeyanju tore into Egbetokun in an interview with Punchng saying, “When the constitution was conferring the right to protest on the citizens, did the constitution give conditions for protests? Is the IG trying to rewrite the constitution? Is he trying to donate rights to the citizens or what? He has no such powers. The constitution and other laws of the land do not give the IG the power to dictate how citizens should protest.”
The human rights activist and lawyer equally levelled harassment of intending protesters at security operatives, remarking that that some of them had been arrested in states like Kano, Sokoto, and Zamfara, only to be released after widespread condemnation and outcries.
