The long-awaited boost to Nigeria’s police manpower has moved a step closer as the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Thursday officially handed over 50,000 newly recruited police constables to the Nigeria Police Force for training.
The massive recruitment batch was formally presented to police authorities by the PSC in line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive and existing legal provisions guiding police recruitment.
PSC spokesperson, Torty Kalu, said the handover ceremony was led by Commissioner I of the commission, retired Justice Paul Galumje, who praised the President for backing the exercise aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security.
Galumje formally released the successful candidates to the police for training at designated police colleges and other approved institutions across the country.
He also handed over the complete list of successful recruits to police authorities through a flash drive.
Receiving the recruits on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police, DIG Isyaku Mohammed, head of the Force Training and Development Department, hailed the PSC for what he described as a transparent and credible recruitment process.
Mohammed assured that training would commence simultaneously nationwide once funds for the exercise were made available.
The Director of the Police Service Department at the Ministry of Police Affairs, Ibrahim A. Muhammad, also described the recruitment process as fair and transparent, while PSC Secretary Onyemuche Nnamani credited the success of the exercise to the cooperation of all stakeholders.
The recruitment drive followed President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency on November 26, 2025, when he approved the enlistment of 50,000 additional police officers to tackle rising security challenges.
The recruitment portal opened on December 15, 2025, and closed on February 8, 2026, after a two-week extension. The process was completed about seven months later, paving the way for the training and eventual deployment of the new officers.
