The Federal Government has assuaged fears of losing credit balance that prepaid meters users may nurse over the compulsory update of their meters.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, had said power consumers stood the risk of losing their prepaid meters if they failed to update it before next year’s November.
“If you have a prepaid meter, it may be time for an update. From November, 2024, you may not be able to recharge your meter. However, updating is easy and free.
“Discos (distribution companies) shall commence issuance of two free Key Change Tokens which will update your meter. The update will not affect the units in your meter nor will it make your meter run faster than usual. Contact your Disco for more information,” it was stated on the official X page of NERC.
The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, NEMSA, has echoed NERC’s call.
In a statement by its Managing Director Aliyu Tahir, NEMSA said, “Let me assure all electricity customers that they have nothing to fear as the meter upgrade process will not affect the credit unit balance on their meters. The credit balance will remain intact after the upgrade.
“They are also to note that meter upgrade is a one-time process. Subsequent energy token purchases will continue as usual after the upgrade has been completed.”
