An officer with Nigerian Correctional Service, NSC, has been suspended for his role in a convicted inmate’s quest to obtain an International passport.
As per Punchng, the suspended officer is attached to Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre, Apapa and is simply identified as Femi.
A warder, the report said Femi accompanied a robbery convict, Haruna Ayo, to passport office at FESTAC Town on Wednesday, May 19, 2025.
Ayo, the publication wrote, was convicted for armed robbery and at first sentenced to life imprisonment, but on appeal, it was commuted to 21 years and further reviewed downward after some consideration. Ultimately, he was due for release on October 11, 2025.
His plan to obtain an International passport while serving his term is causing ripples and has landed those involved in the shenanigans in NSC in troubled waters.
Things were reportedly proceeding as anticipated at the Passport office until the suspended warder expressed concern about time not on their side and voiced out: “I need to take him back to the cell.”
That statement called forth suspicion among immigration officers, who then detained both the inmate and the warder and alerted their superiors.
The report also has it that the convict usually enjoyed being taken out of the facility under the guise of getting medical attention.
It equally communicated that not few officers had hands in the scandalous act, and quoted the prison Service Public Relations Officer, Abubakar Umar, as saying: “The staff member suspected to have committed the act has been suspended, and investigation is ongoing. The suspension is necessary to ensure a smooth process.”
