The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has broken his silence on the 2027 presidential race, distancing himself from claims that he has thrown his weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The Sultan’s position came after reports circulated on social media claiming that the revered monarch had urged Nigerians to support Tinubu for another term in office.
But the Sultan Media Team on Tuesday dismissed the report, describing it as a malicious attempt to drag the monarch into partisan politics.
In a statement signed by Prince Bashir Adefaka, the team urged Nigerians to disregard the report, stressing that the Sultan had not endorsed any candidate for the 2027 election.
The team said the Sultan’s position as a traditional and religious leader made him a father figure to all Nigerians and not a supporter of any particular political party or candidate.
It explained that politicians from across the political divide regularly visit the Sultan to seek his prayers, blessings and counsel.
According to the statement, the Sultan would continue to receive politicians regardless of their political affiliations because his doors must remain open to everyone.
The team stressed that the monarch had consistently demonstrated that he was “the father of all” and would continue to relate with Nigerians without discrimination.
It warned against attempts to misrepresent the Sultan’s position or portray him as backing a particular candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Sultan Media Team said the monarch remained focused on promoting peace, unity, stability and peaceful coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.
It also fired a warning to media practitioners and social media users, urging them to verify information before sharing reports capable of misleading the public or dragging respected traditional and religious institutions into political controversies.
