A fresh storm is rocking the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) as an internal battle erupts over a pro-President Bola Tinubu support group ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The crisis was triggered after the NLC national secretariat moved against the activities of the Working People United (WoPU), a political support movement openly campaigning for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
In a directive sent to affiliate unions and labour officials, the NLC leadership warned members to distance themselves from the group, insisting that the congress must remain independent and avoid being dragged into partisan politics.
The move has reportedly created tension within the labour movement, with supporters of WoPU accusing the NLC leadership of attempting to silence workers who have chosen to support the Tinubu administration.
However, labour authorities maintained that the directive was aimed at protecting the credibility and neutrality of the workers’ umbrella body.
The controversy has also placed the Lagos State chapter of the NLC under scrutiny, as questions emerge over the involvement of some labour leaders linked to the pro-Tinubu group.
The development comes at a politically charged period as parties and support groups begin early mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Tinubu’s relationship with organised labour has been a subject of debate since the removal of fuel subsidy and subsequent negotiations over wage increases, with the NLC frequently clashing with the Federal Government over economic policies.
The latest crisis now threatens to deepen divisions within the labour movement, as political interests collide with the traditional role of the NLC as the voice of Nigerian worker.
