A shocking “love charm” saga has rocked Kebbi State after police arrested a 29-year-old man, Abubakar Musa, for allegedly burying a copy of the Holy Qur’an alongside fetish materials in a bid to influence a woman’s relationship.
The suspect, a resident of Rafin Mose Village in Zuru Local Government Area, was picked up by the Kebbi State Police Command over allegations bordering on criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious materials and activities capable of causing religious tension in the community.
According to police authorities, the bizarre incident happened on August 9 around the Zango area of Zuru, where Musa allegedly teamed up with two other suspects — Rabi’u Tela, husband of Zarau Hassan, and Hamza Zango — to carry out the act.
The two accomplices are currently on the run as police intensify efforts to track them down.
Investigators said a pit was allegedly dug inside Zarau Hassan’s room, where several items were buried, including a copy of the Qur’an, underwear, white and red kolanuts, animal remains, alleged bodily substances and other materials suspected to be connected to traditional rituals.
Police sources said the alleged motive was to make Zarau Hassan “more submissive” to her husband, Rabi’u Tela — an action authorities described as capable of provoking anger and unrest among Muslim faithful in the area.
The incident has sparked outrage, with residents questioning the increasing cases of people turning to spiritual and occult practices to manipulate relationships.
A disturbing pattern across Nigeria
The Kebbi incident comes amid previous reports of bizarre ritual-related activities across Nigeria, where some individuals have been arrested for allegedly using sacred objects, human remains and other materials for charms, money rituals or personal gain.
In 2024, police in different parts of the country reported several arrests linked to ritual practices, including cases involving alleged possession of human body parts and suspected ritual killings. In some instances, suspects claimed they were seeking wealth, protection or spiritual powers.
Nigeria has also witnessed repeated warnings from security agencies and religious leaders against the misuse and desecration of sacred materials, with authorities stressing that such acts could trigger communal tension.
Police vow crackdown
Kebbi State Police spokesman, SP Bashir Usman, said Musa would remain in custody while investigations continue before he is charged to court.
The suspects are facing allegations including criminal conspiracy, abuse of religious books, use of spells and hypnosis, and inciting public disturbance.
Kebbi State Commissioner of Police, CP Umar M. Hadejia, condemned the alleged act, warning that the command would take decisive action against anyone whose activities threaten religious harmony and public order.
“The command will deal decisively, within the law, with individuals whose actions threaten religious harmony, public order, and peaceful coexistence,” he said.
The police urged residents with useful information about the fleeing suspects to contact the command, assuring that identities of informants would remain confidential.
