A yet-to-be-identified Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) has been crushed to death by a truck opposite Mega Primary School, along Hospital Road, Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The fatal incident, which reportedly occurred as the officer attempted to intercept the truck, sparked panic among residents and fellow officers who witnessed the tragedy.
A video shared by Akure-based radio station Crest FM on Friday captured residents shouting in distress as people gathered around the scene.
According to eyewitnesses, the officer tried to stop the truck after it entered the fast lane but was unable to prevent it from moving before disaster struck.
The officer was reportedly trapped beneath the trailer after being hit, leaving his colleagues visibly shaken as residents watched in horror.
The circumstances surrounding the incident, including why the truck was being intercepted and what happened immediately before the collision, remained unclear at the time of filing this report.
The tragedy comes amid recurring concerns over fatal road crashes involving heavy-duty vehicles and other road users in Nigeria. Incidents involving trucks have repeatedly raised questions about road safety, reckless driving, vehicle conditions and the dangers faced by traffic enforcement officers while carrying out their duties.
However, it was not immediately clear whether speeding, mechanical failure or any other factor contributed to the Akure crash.
Authorities had yet to release an official statement identifying the deceased officer or explaining the circumstances that led to his death.
