A 55-year-old motorist narrowly escaped death after a moving train rammed into his Honda car at the PWD railway crossing in Lagos, leaving the vehicle badly wrecked.
The train, which was heading towards Agege, collided with the Honda, bearing registration number EKY 902 JT, in an incident that disrupted traffic around the PWD area.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officials, working alongside security personnel, rescued the driver and removed the wrecked vehicle from the railway tracks, allowing the train to continue its journey.
However, traffic congestion persisted around the scene after the accident.
LASTMA said the damaged car was handed over to security personnel to enable an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the officials and security operatives for their swift intervention, stressing the importance of collaboration in managing emergencies involving railway lines and adjoining roads.
He warned motorists against taking chances at railway crossings, urging them to remain vigilant and avoid crossing the tracks whenever a train is approaching or in motion.
Bakare-Oki cautioned that reckless disregard for railway safety rules could result in devastating and irreversible consequences.
LASTMA also appealed to road users to obey traffic regulations and railway safety guidelines, stressing that the protection of human life must take priority over every other consideration.
The Lagos incident comes months after another railway mishap along the Abuja-Kaduna corridor left 26 passengers and crew members injured.
In March, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, disclosed that the incident occurred near Asham Station after a loud bang was heard as part of the train formation collided.
According to Opeifa, the Kaduna-Abuja service, KA-2, departed Rigassa Station at 7:15 a.m. and arrived at Jere Station at 8:52 a.m., one minute ahead of schedule.
