The political dynasty debate has returned to Ebonyi State as Osborn Umahi, son of Minister of Works, David Umahi, steps into the spotlight with his ambition to become chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate stormed the campaign trail on Monday, August 17, rallying supporters at the St Margaret Umahi Pavilion in Uburu, ahead of the Ebonyi State local government election scheduled for August 22, 2026.
His emergence has drawn attention to the growing trend of Nigerian politicians’ children taking up political roles, with critics questioning whether power is becoming a family inheritance, while supporters argue that political experience and public service can run in families.
Across Nigeria, several prominent political families have seen their children move into public offices or seek elective positions. From governors’ children contesting elections to lawmakers’ relatives occupying key political positions, the involvement of political heirs has continued to generate heated public debate.
Osborn Umahi, an engineer and financial expert, secured the APC nomination and expression-of-interest forms before emerging as the party’s candidate for the Ohaozara chairmanship seat.
During the campaign, supporters described him as a symbol of “new generation leadership”, praising his professional background and promising that he would bring fresh ideas and competence to the council if elected.
A statement signed by Francis Nwaze, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Works, said the campaign attracted massive support from residents who expressed confidence in Umahi’s ability to lead the local government.
“The people of Ohaozara Local Government Area have demonstrated strong support and enthusiasm for the emergence of their young and vibrant son, Engr. Osborn Umahi, as a new generation of leadership,” the statement said.
The statement portrayed Umahi as a candidate with a blend of engineering knowledge, financial expertise and leadership experience, insisting that these qualities would help him provide effective governance.
Supporters at the rally described his candidacy as more than a political ambition, saying it represented an opportunity for Ohaozara to embrace a younger generation of leaders.
However, his entry into the race has also reignited conversations about political succession in Nigeria, where influential families have often produced multiple generations of politicians.
While some Nigerians see such moves as evidence of political monopolies and privilege, others argue that children of politicians should not be denied the right to participate in politics simply because of their family background.
With the August 22 local government election fast approaching, the battle now shifts from campaign rallies and endorsements to winning the confidence of voters at the polls.
For Umahi, the son of one of Ebonyi’s most influential political figures, the election will determine whether his family name can translate into grassroots support.
