Tragedy struck in Lagos on Friday after a man reportedly died while behind the wheel of a St. Ives Specialist Hospital ambulance caught in traffic.

The incident, which was captured in a video circulating on social media, reportedly left passers-by shocked when they discovered that the driver was unresponsive inside the ambulance.

The ambulance was reportedly not carrying any patient or corpse at the time of the incident, raising questions about what may have happened to the driver before his death.

In the video, people gathered around the ambulance could be seen trying to reach the hospital using the telephone number displayed on the vehicle.

They reportedly made the calls after discovering that the man inside the ambulance appeared to have died, apparently seeking assistance and notifying the hospital of the development.

The exact location of the incident and the identity of the deceased were not immediately established.

It was also unclear whether the man died from a medical condition or suffered any other emergency while driving. There was no immediate indication from the footage that the ambulance had been involved in a road crash.

St. Ives Specialist Hospital is a private healthcare provider with facilities in Lagos, including its Opebi and Ikoyi locations. The hospital also operates an ambulance service for emergency response and patient transfers across Lagos and Abeokuta.

As of the time of filing this report, St. Ives had not publicly explained the circumstances surrounding the reported death.

The identity of the deceased, his age and the cause of death are also yet to be confirmed.
