Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has raised the alarm over a “suspicious” credit alert lodged in one of his private bank accounts.
The former Vice President alleged that the money was transferred into his account by an individual or entity completely unknown to him, with the transaction carrying the narration, “Contribution Electioneering Campaign.”
According to Atiku, neither he nor his campaign organisation solicited, authorised or had any prior knowledge of the payment.
The development has raised fresh concerns over the security and confidentiality of the banking details of the former Vice President, particularly as he prepares for increased political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, said the circumstances surrounding the mysterious transfer were “deeply troubling”.
Shaibu questioned how unknown individuals could have obtained the details of a strictly private bank account belonging to Atiku when such information was not in the public domain.
“Understandably, the circumstances surrounding the transfer are deeply troubling to His Excellency. The account is a strictly private one whose details are not in the public domain,” the statement said.
The statement further asked: “How did unknown persons obtain the confidential banking details of a private citizen?”
Shaibu warned that if the private banking information of a former Vice President and presidential candidate could be accessed and used without his authorisation, the development should concern every Nigerian.
He also raised the possibility that the confidential information could have been obtained through individuals with privileged access to sensitive banking or personal data.
“If established, this would amount to a grave abuse of power capable of exposing the account holder to kidnappers, terrorists, bandits, fraudsters and other criminal elements,” Shaibu said.
The Atiku camp consequently alerted Nigerians and security agencies to the incident, describing it as part of what it called a “litany of suspicious activities” ahead of the next general elections.
With political activities expected to intensify in the coming months, Shaibu urged Nigerians not to be distracted by what he described as attempts at character assassination.
He maintained that such tactics would not derail Atiku’s political ambitions, insisting that the ADC presidential candidate remained focused on providing what he described as credible leadership and practical solutions to Nigeria’s challenges.
