Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has renewed calls for an independent investigation of the prolonged disappearance of a lecturer and critic Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.

Dadiyata was famed for trolling the administration of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai while the latter was Kaduna State Governor, and was abducted by gunmen in August 2019.

Since then, his whereabouts remains unknown, with rumour rife that the former governor was responsible for the situation, a claim he dismissed on Friday in interview with Arise TV where he alleged that former Kano governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje was responsible.

Weighing in on the matter, Amnesty in a statement on Saturday urged authorities to investigate Dadiyata’s prolonged disappearance.

“The abduction of Abubakar Idris (Dadiyata) on 2 August 2019 in Kaduna is connected to to his critical voice on social media. The time for investigation is now,” the rights group stated.

“An independent, public and resourceful investigation is urgently needed to establish the truth,” Amnesty said further.

The group expressed concerns over the emotional impact the situation has on Dadiyata’s family and loved ones, saying, “His family has been living with the anguish of not knowing his whereabouts.”
