A Nigerian nurse, Bemi Orojuogun, who turned her love for London’s famous red buses into a global social media sensation has received a rare honour, with a bus stop in the United Kingdom named after her.
Bemi Orojuogun, popularly known online as “London Bus Aunty”, was celebrated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) after Transport for London (TfL) recognised her unique connection with the city’s transport network.
The honour has sparked excitement among Nigerians in the diaspora, with NiDCOM describing it as a proud moment that highlights the impact Nigerians continue to make across the world.
NiDCOM Chairman/CEO, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said Orojuogun’s recognition showed how passion, authenticity and a strong connection to one’s environment could create a lasting global impact.
In a statement by NiDCOM’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, the commission praised Orojuogun for using her platform to celebrate everyday London life while promoting a positive image of Nigerians abroad.
Orojuogun, who has spent over 30 years in the UK, became an internet favourite through her cheerful videos featuring London’s iconic double-decker buses. Her trademark appearances beside passing buses, often accompanied by her infectious enthusiasm, attracted millions of views and turned her into a beloved figure among transport enthusiasts and social media users.
The recognition came after Orojuogun announced on Instagram that she had been honoured with a bus stop bearing her name.
Overwhelmed by the gesture, she thanked TfL workers and described the moment as a dream come true, praising the thousands of staff who keep London’s transport system running daily.
TfL also reacted warmly to her announcement, celebrating the honour and acknowledging her special bond with the city’s transport community.
NiDCOM said the achievement was another reminder of the contributions Nigerians are making globally in different fields, urging Orojuogun to continue inspiring others through her positive storytelling.
From a simple love for London buses to becoming a recognised face of the city’s transport culture, “London Bus Aunty” has now earned a place in the history of the very system she spent years celebrating.
