Chaos erupted on the Odo Iya Alaro Link Bridge in Maryland, Lagos, after police officers were accused of pushing a motorist off the bridge during a confrontation over an alleged Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane violation.
The shocking incident, said to have happened on Friday, has sparked outrage after a video circulated on social media showing a heated clash between police officers and a group of young men on the bridge.
Witnesses claimed the officers stopped the driver for allegedly using the BRT lane, but the argument turned violent after a dispute over the penalty.
In the footage, more than 10 young men are seen confronting the officers, while the alleged victim lies on the ground below the bridge, surrounded by sympathisers.
A voice in the video, speaking in Pidgin English, accused the officers of routinely extorting motorists.
“Those BRT people at Maryland have pushed someone from the bridge. They always stop drivers, force them to withdraw ₦50,000, ₦80,000 or even ₦100,000. Because this man refused to pay, they pushed him off the bridge,” the narrator alleged.
The narrator further claimed the officers regularly harass motorists at Odo Iya Alaro Bridge, causing traffic gridlock while accusing drivers of using the BRT lane.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity and condition of the alleged victim had not been confirmed, and it remained unclear whether the person survived the fall.
BRT lane enforcement in Lagos is overseen by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) under the Ministry of Transportation.
The Lagos State Government suspended enforcement along the Eko Bridge and Odo Iya Alaro corridor in July last year to ease traffic congestion but reinstated it in October.
