Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about the childhood friend he says played a major role in turning his early interest in music into the career that eventually made him a global star.
The singer made the revelation during a livestream with content creator Carter Efe on Tuesday, giving fans a glimpse into the little-known story behind his rise to fame.
Davido singled out his childhood friend and Personal Assistant,
Lateef Abiola, better known as Lati, as one of the people who helped shape his musical journey from an early age.
“Without Lati, there’s no Davido,” the singer declared.
Lati, Davido revealed, was once employed by his late mother and remained around the family after her death.
He said their bond became particularly strong because Lati was the youngest member of staff in the household, allowing the two to connect easily.
But after Davido’s mother died, his stepmother reportedly asked Lati to leave the family home.
Before then, however, Lati had already introduced the young Davido to a world that would later become his destiny.
Davido disclosed that Lati was involved in music production and DJing and would secretly take him to recording studios in his car.
Those secret trips, according to the singer, gave him an early taste of the music business and allowed him to see what happened inside recording studios.
The friendship was later interrupted when Davido was sent to the United States for schooling at about 12 or 13.
He said they lost contact for several years before he returned to Nigeria for the December holidays at about 14.
Davido then went searching for his old friend — and their reunion would lead to a promise that he would eventually fulfil.
The singer told Lati that he was now taking music seriously and planned to make a name for himself.
Davido said he assured his friend that once he became successful, he would return for him so they could travel the world together.
And according to the superstar, he kept his word.
As his music career exploded, Lati eventually joined his team and became part of Davido’s journey to international fame.
Interestingly, Davido revealed that Lati has since left the entertainment industry and now works in the oil and gas sector.
For the superstar, however, the role his childhood friend played in his life remains unforgettable.
From secretly sneaking him into recording studios as a boy to eventually becoming part of his team, Lati, Davido revealed, was there long before the world knew the name “Davido.”
