The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has thrown accusation of stealing $720,000 over N800m from Kogi State government’s coffers to pay his child’s school fees while his time as governor was winding down at Yahaya Bello.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, made this revelation at an interactive session with editors and bureau chiefs in Abuja on Tuesday, where he threatened to resign if he is unable to see to the prosecution of Bello.
The latter has been a subject of prosecution by the EFCC for alleged N80.2billion fraud while he was in the saddle of Kogi State.
A saga, the issue has had various sequences, with Bello being on the run in a bid to avoid arrest, and consequently declared wanted by the anti-graft agency, placed on the watchlist by the Nigeria Immigration Service while his security details and ADC were recalled by the police authorities.
Speaking on the matter at the said occasion, Olukoyede ascribed giant greed to the ex-governor, saying at the twilight of his administration he threw caution to the wind by allegedly stealing $720,000 at one fell swoop to pay his child’s school fees.
The EFCC chair’s own word, “A sitting governor, because he knew that he was going, he removed money directly from government’s account to bureau de change, and used it to pay his child’s school fee in advance. Dollars, $720,000 in advance, in anticipation that he was going to leave the government house.”
