Former Kano Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has agreed with notion that the controversial emir of Kano throne is heading towards occupant holding the position for a period of time.

Once upon a time, the appointment of the Kano emir like other gazetted traditional headship was no doubt for life.

The saga in Kano, first, the dethronement of Sanusi Lamido by immediate former governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje while he held sway in the state, and the latest deposition of Lamido’s successor by the incumbent governor, Yusuf Abba, with the ex-governor of Central Bank of Nigeria now reinstated, has set tongues wagging about the situation further leading to a tenured monarch.

Kwankwaso, a prominent actor in the powerplay that precipated the crisis rocking the emirate said the tenure thing is not impossible.

The former Minister of Defence opined this in an interview with BBC Hausa Service saying, “Those that are looking at it from the perspective of whether it’s going to be tenure-based are somehow right.* But who started it?

“When I came back as Governor in 2011, everybody knew that the late Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, was not supporting us; he was supporting (Ex-Gov Ibrahim Shekarau).

“But when we got into power we didn’t even think of dethroning him. This is why we are telling people that everybody should sit down where he belongs.”
