The Lagos State Government has moved against unsafe practices in the spa and beauty industry, warning operators that poor hygiene, workplace hazards and negligence could expose customers and workers to serious health risks and preventable injuries.

The Lagos State Safety Commission urged operators to make hygiene, workplace safety and risk prevention central to their business operations rather than treat them as optional requirements.

The Director of Administration and Human Resources, Awolesi Ademola, who represented the commission’s Director-General, Lanre Mojola, gave the warning at a one-day training programme for beauty industry operators in Lagos.

The programme, themed “Safe Hands, Safe Spaces: Building a Zero-Harm Culture in the Spa and Beauty Industry,” was organised to equip practitioners with skills to identify workplace hazards, assess operational risks and prevent accidents.

Ademola said providing a safe business environment went beyond complying with regulations, stressing that operators and employees must make risk prevention part of their daily activities.

Mojola urged participants to apply the lessons from the training to improve safety standards, protect clients and provide better working conditions for their staff.

He said the commission remained committed to promoting safety awareness across different sectors of the Lagos economy to protect workers, business owners, residents and visitors.

The training featured discussions on hazard identification and control in spa operations, as well as occupational health challenges confronting beauty professionals.

The Lagos State Chairman of the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Olusola Ogunleye, spoke on advanced risk assessment and hazard control, while the Chief Medical Director of Skintetics Clinics, Chuka Imo, addressed occupational health and ergonomic safety.

The Head of the Commission’s Spa, Gym, Cinema, Parks and Gardens Unit, Abiola Mary Abiola, urged participants to implement the lessons in their businesses.
