The Lagos Government has announced its plan to establish ‘Waste Police’ in a bid to root out indiscriminate waste disposal in the state.
Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, made this known on Saturday during a strategic meeting involving the Transport Ministry, the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
Osiyemi stressed that the state government had zero-tolerance policy for indiscriminate waste dumping on roads saying Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is determined to restore cleanliness to roads, motor parks, and transport corridors.
In light of the governor’s resolve, the commissioner said plan was in the pipeline to establish a special “Waste Police” to monitor environmental sanitation compliance across the state.
“The Waste Police will serve as the eyes and ears of government within the transport sector. Their responsibility will be to ensure that refuse is not dumped indiscriminately and that environmental standards are maintained at all times,” he said.
He added that the Ministry would soon commence enforcement activities to ensure that all transport facilities complied with environmental standards.
