Angry protesters in Ilorin at Eid Prayer Ground stoned embattled Senate President Bukola Saraki and pelted him with sachet water over allegation that he stole N17 trillion belonging to Kwara State government.
Hundreds of Muslim faithful who converged at Eid prayer ground at Irewolede were barred from observing the eid prayer after the angry protesters went on rampage, stoned Sen. Saraki and were hauling sachet water at the direction he and other dignitaries sat including the emir of Ilorin, Alh. Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, booing him and shouting ole ole (thief thief).
The prayer was disrupted as several worshipers could not partake in the prayer session. However, normalcy later returned after police fired tear gas to disperse protesters.
Meanwhile Sen. Bukola Saraki on Wednesday got a royal welcome when he arrived Ilorin, the Kwara State capital for Sallah just as his supporters threatened to attack Alh. Lai Muhammed, Punch and the Nation newspapers.
While the Senate President is not technically royalty, he is unarguably the state’s political leader and an holds the traditional title of Turaki of Ilorin.
The private jet conveying him landed at Ilorin Airport around 6.00pm to a frenzied and rousing welcome from thousands of his supporters including the Kwara State governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed.
In groups and discussing Saraki’s battle with the leadership of All Progressive Congress, APC, and his arraignment by Code of Conduct Bureau( CCB) over false assets declaration they were heard blaming APC’s spokesperson, Alh. Lai Muhammed, an indigene of Kwara, The Nation and Punch newspapers for the senate president’s trouble.
Sources said they threatened to stone and attack Alh. Muhammed who hails from Oro in Irepodun Local Government Area of the state any time he set foot in Ilorin.
The angry supporters also expressed their discontentment with the alleged roles The Nation and Punch newspapers played in their political leader’s trouble generally recalling how Punch online reported on its website when Saraki was being docked that the trial was beamed live on Television Continental, TVC, and encouraging the public to watch it live.
“They threatened to stone to death the newspapers’ correspondents and their Ilorin offices,” sources said.
It will be recalled that Sen. Bukola Saraki in early 2014 in Ilorin in the wake of his struggle for political supremacy with his younger sister, Sen. Gbemi Saraki was stoned at Great hall, his late father’s house at GRA.
