Beyond the presidential convoy, luxury vehicles and the glamour attached to Nigeria’s highest office, a different picture of President Bola Tinubu’s personal lifestyle has emerged.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Zacch Adedeji, has dismissed claims that the President lives extravagantly, insisting that Tinubu maintains a simple and disciplined routine despite his position.
Adedeji made the revelation during a Channels Television interview with journalist Seun Okinbaloye while responding to questions about the lifestyles of political office holders amid growing concerns over government spending and the economic challenges facing Nigerians.
According to the NRS boss, Tinubu’s life behind the walls of the presidency is far removed from the image of luxury often associated with leaders in power.
He claimed that the President walks from his residence to his office and only uses a vehicle when travelling to the airport.
“Mr President goes from home to office on foot, not even driving except when he is going to the airport,” Adedeji said, questioning reports about the size of the President’s convoy.
He also claimed that Tinubu eats only once a day, spends most of his time working and has not travelled outside Nigeria in the last three months.
Adedeji challenged critics who question the use of luxury vehicles around the President, arguing that Tinubu has the means to afford such cars if he chooses to use them.
“How much is an Escalade that the President of Nigeria cannot afford? Please don’t embarrass this country,” he said.
The comments have revived memories of earlier descriptions of Tinubu’s lifestyle before he became President.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, had in previous remarks portrayed Tinubu as someone with simple personal habits, claiming that the former Lagos governor was not a man driven by luxury or appearances.
Lawal had spoken about Tinubu’s old lifestyle, alleging that he was known for smoking, eating bananas and sometimes appearing unkempt — a description that contrasted sharply with the formal image expected of political leaders.
Adedeji further argued that Tinubu’s schedule reflects a leader focused on work rather than leisure, asking critics to point to occasions where the President had been seen frequently attending parties or taking holidays.
“How many parties have you seen him at in the last three years? Tell me where you have seen him, whether on holiday or anywhere?” he asked.
The claims have sparked fresh debate over the private lives of Nigerian leaders and whether public perception matches the reality behind the scenes.
