The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Abuja zone, said forty-six of its members have died in recent time as a result of prevailing economic hardship and poor remuneration of lecturers.
The Abuja Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, Salihu Muhammed Lawal, declared this on Monday in Abuja, at a press conference.
Lawal said apart from poor pay and the current erosion of workers’ purchasing power, some of the deceased died of work-related stress and diseases bred by unconducive working situation.
“In fact, just two days back the union lost an eminent Professor of Fisheries, Johnson Oyero, of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, due to inability to afford quality medical care,” he said.
The ASUU Abuja Zone comprises of University of Abuja; Federal University of Technology, Minna; Federal University, Lafia; Nasarawa State University and Ibrahim Babaginda University, Lapai, Niger.
