The family of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has moved swiftly to dispel reports making the rounds on social media that the actor has died.
The clarification came amid growing concern over the actor’s health after his daughters publicly disclosed that he is battling stage-four cancer and appealed for urgent help.
Ogogo’s daughter, Haleemah Taiwo, on Tuesday reacted to the viral reports of her father’s alleged death through her Instagram page, describing the claim as false.
In a brief disclaimer, she urged members of the public to stop circulating the unverified report, writing: “This is fake. Please stop spreading fake news.”
The family’s intervention came less than 24 hours after Haleemah had raised an emotional alarm over her father’s deteriorating health, asking members of the public and medical professionals with possible solutions to reach out to the family.
She had appealed specifically for people with knowledge of advanced medical treatment or herbal remedies to contact her, amid the family’s concerns over the actor’s ongoing treatment.
According to her, the hospital had stopped administering chemotherapy to the veteran actor, a development that apparently heightened anxiety among his children and fans.
The latest death rumour therefore triggered fresh concern among fans of the celebrated Yoruba actor, with the unverified report spreading rapidly across social media before the family stepped in with the disclaimer.
The development has also highlighted the danger of social media speculation surrounding the health of public figures, particularly at a time when the family is already dealing with the emotional strain of a serious illness.
Ogogo, one of the most recognisable faces in Yoruba-language cinema, has enjoyed a decades-long career in the Nigerian film industry and has built a large following through his roles in numerous Yoruba movies.
While his family has confirmed that he is seriously ill, there has been no confirmation from the family that he has died.
For now, the family’s message is clear: reports announcing Ogogo’s death are false, and the public has been urged to disregard and stop circulating them.
