The Presidency has shared the context of the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police.
Report making the rounds claims President Bola Tinubu ordered Egbetokun to resign on Monday at the Aso Villa when he met with the President.
The speculation suggests presidential aggrievement with the hitherto IGP’s performance in office
Contrary to that Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in an interview he granted Punchng denied the thread.
Onanuga in his statement said Egbetokun quit the job of his own volition.
“The IGP resigned in a letter today, citing family issues which require his undivided attention,” the publication quoted the presidential aide as saying.
Orijoreporter recalls that the President appointed Egbetokun as the IGP in June 2023 for four years.
According to Section 18(8) of the Police Act 2020, Egbetokun, who was born on September 4, 1964, and that basis was expected to retire in September 2024, when he clocked 60.
However he became the first beneficiary of the Police Act Amendment Bill which enables a person appointed to the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP) to remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment.
