The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has arrested some members of a cult group in the Fedèral Capital Territory Abuja for sextortion.
sextortion is a crime that occurs when perpetrator is in possession of the victim’s nude video or other private images and threatens to publish it online if not paid money or allow to sleep with the person.
The suspects’ arrest was made public by a statement NAPTIP Press Officer, Vincent Adekoye released.
In it, Adekoye related that the apprehension was the consequence of intelligence and investigation at the behest of NAPTIP director-general Fatima Waziri-Azi.
Waziri-Azi, according to the account, said the crime is on the rise due to victims’ fear of public humiliation if perpetrators were reported to the police.
“The shame, fear, and confusion victims feel when caught in this cycle often prevent them from asking for help or reporting the abuse,” the NAPTIP Boss reportedly said.
She also urged victims to speak out; “Do not be gaslighted into thinking it was your fault. It is a crime and a crime against you. Report all perpetrators. If you do not report, you are emboldening these criminals, and what happened to you will definitely happen to someone else.”
Recall that three years ago, one Olufowoke Oladunjoye Emmanuel, then a teenager, was arrested for blackmailing a popular Yoruba musician, Queen Salawa Abeni, with some nude photographs( one of it above).
