Controversy has trailed loads of dates the government of Saudi Arabia donated to the federal government following the selling of the fruits in the market.
The Saudi Arabia government had given about 200 tons of dates to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for onward distribution to Muslims observing Ramadan fasting.

The gift, which was expected to be shared out to Muslims faithful, however, found its way into Abuja markets where it was being sold.
Taking responsibility for the sale, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement by its spokesperson, Clement Aduku, expressed regret at the development, adding that the matter is being investigated to avoid a repeat in the future.
The statement reads in part, ” It is important to note that once the dates were delivered to their final destinations, the ministry of foreign affairs became devoid of any subsequent responsibility. It is therefore disappointing to learn that some of the consignment is being sold for profit.”
