The presidential order directing the Inspector General of Police to withdraw officers attached to VIPs amid the growing insecurity across the country is yet to take effect in the Senate.

Senator Ali Ndume, former Chief Whip of the Senate and representative of Borno South disclosed this in an interview he granted Channels Television on Thursday night, saying, “Up till now, senators are still overcrowded with policemen.”

Ndume urged the IGP to ensure full compliance with the presidential order, asserting that redeploying police officers from VIP protection to community and operational duties would boost national security far more than assigning them to individuals.

The senator advocated for a part-time legislative system for federal lawmakers.

This, he said, would help the country to save billions of naira annually, remarking that the national assembly as it stands is financially unsustainable.

“The cost of governance is too high. If lawmakers sit part-time, government would save billions,” he advocated.
